How to recognise a broken HDMI port on your PS5

No picture on your PS5, and someone told you it could be the HDMI port. Before you send anything in, you can often check it yourself with a torch.

What the port should look like

An HDMI port has nineteen flat pins in two rows, top and bottom. They all stick out equally and rest on a small plastic tongue in the middle. A pin at an angle, a pin lying flat, a gap where a pin should be, or a broken tongue: all of that is suspicious.

How to look

  1. Switch the console off and unplug it.
  2. Bring the port to eye level.
  3. Shine straight into the port, then look from the side and from below. Bent pins are rarely visible from the front.
  4. Take a zoomed-in photo: it helps us with the diagnosis too.

Black, brown or dull metal points to a burn-out or moisture, often after a thunderstorm.

Port or chip?

  • Pin bent, flat or missing: damaged port, a new port needs soldering.
  • Picture comes and goes when you wiggle the cable: the port has come loose from the board.
  • The cable no longer clicks in: broken shield or tongue, new port.
  • The port looks perfect but there is never a picture: often the HDMI chip on the logic board.

Why you should not straighten anything yourself

These pins are thin and have already been bent once. On the second move they almost always snap, and then there is nothing left to work with. Forcing the port can also tear the tiny solder pads off the board, which makes the repair more expensive. Glue is even worse: it creeps between the contacts.

The port looks fine and the screen stays black? Also read our page on a console with no picture.
